Rectangle

A short story about artmaking and social media.

Today, I bought a rectangle.

Everyone has them these days. There are worlds inside of them.

Bright light flooded the seams of the box it arrived in. It looked like a piece of paper, but it shined brilliantly.

Drawn in by its beauty, I pressed my face close to the device. Its bright surface accepted my skin readily, like tension on a pool of water. I slipped into the portal within it.

Partially submerged between two worlds, I observed as hands rose from the water around me. They offered shapes to the wind, which carried each creation to a unique place in the world’s endless architecture.

My body lay limp, hours passed. I vowed to offer my own creations to the strange, beautiful world.

I made many shapes for the rectangle. But no matter how perfect my craft, the wind lifted each differently.

When they flew low and broke apart, I vowed to make them better. But when they flew gracefully, I could never quite replicate their design. My work changed and distorted, until I could barely see myself in it.

No matter how my creations fared in that world, their purpose felt far removed from me. They became a part of something greater; beautiful but intangible.

I still make shapes. I even offer some to the rectangle.

But I think I’m happiest when I make them for myself, where I know the weather best.
